It's all about the shot list

kt's picture

I ended my previous blog with the sun peeking through the clouds...the weather was gonna be just fine.  Call was 7am... yep, 7am on a Saturday.  James had brought the coffee and donuts... I unloaded the craft service and we discussed the day's first shot... I had given everybody my Shot List, a must-see piece of paper when you do these low-budget projects... of course, James and Nick had politely looked at the sheet, their watches and then each other.  James murmured something about light and hauls me over to the car to get started.  "What?" I asked him, "there's only 70 or so shots... give or take a few.  There's a lot going on in the script".  "Right", he says... "let's get it done".  Our DP/Camera Operator, Tim Vandenberg, and his awesome crew are already lighting the car (he had seen the Shot List.)

Nick wanders over to wardrobe while I watch the first shot set-up in the monitor. I can tell you that lighting a car is always tough... cars have windows... windows show c-stands and lighting instruments.. glass also gives off reflections and glares... d**n, this is taking a long time.

"How close are we?" I ask James...  "5 minutes or so" he mutters as the crew struggles to move lights and stay out of camera's way.  "Let's invite the cast in"...

Nick has been working with the cast during our lighting setup and they are more then ready to perform.  We set them in the car, lay lights on their laps and get ready to roll...

oh wait... Sound... gotta fit sound in... our sound mixer, Jeff, talks to Tim, "can you see the boom here?  You do, how about here?  No...Good".

James calls out, "Roll Camera". Kim gets the slate in and out...

I wait a beat before calling out "Action".

Our actors run through their lines perfectly and we have the first shot in the can.  I look over to Alicia and tell her that that take is a keeper.  Megan and Conrad get quick photos of the cast and crew...

We're on our way.

p.s.

As of this week, Tim and I have already got a decent rough cut of this shoot done... I'll keep you posted.

Thanks KT. Glad to know things are going well. Keep up the good work.

Hey KT -

Always great to hear from you!  Love to hear about sogopro from your point of view.  I commiserate most with the "having to get up before the crack of dawn."  So many people believe that since I own a bakery I am there early, early.  SO not the case and when I have to be, it is brutal!  So, I understand - it is not human to be up at that hour especially on a Saturday.  Howvever, look at what you are accomplishing!

It really is a shame you don't like to talk more :)

Thanks for the insight, KT. I find it interesting reading through a quick run through of the day, not something you get to read everyday.

Thanks for the insight KT and for letting us into your world of production. It is so fascinating! When a person is at home or at the movie theater watching a movie, they don't realize everything that is involved in the creation ... the Shot List, the craft service, the lighting setup for car shots, etc. We really appreciate being allowed to see the inner workings of a production. Low budget or not, with you guys at the helm, it will be nothing short of amazing!

Thank you for giving us all a peek. It feels like we're right there in the studio with you.

xoxo,

Angie

That's a great entry KT! I can only imagine the chaos when trying to go about these productions... so many bits and pieces to make up the whole picture!

Thank you for a descriptive inside look at shooting SGP Productions... It will be fun to see the finished product and remember the experiences you shared on here... (Speaking of a whole picture... how cool is that? Not only do we get to enjoy the webisode by itself but we all have a peak into the stories that go along with making it..)
You guys seriously rock, I hope you know that!

Thanks, as always, for keeping us 100% entertained. Ya'll do it so well!

:)
