What's Hilarie Been Up To?
Oh hell folks....I've been so bad about sending in my updates. To be perfectly honest, I've just been busy living my life. Went home to Virginia for a few days. I have 4 best girlfriends there and even though we're in our late twenties, we're still having sleepovers in my best friend Sarah's parents' house. (Thank you to the Barnes!!! The brownies were supreme!).
It was perfect. Something we try to do once a year or so. It's our little cult and I swear I'll love these women till the day I die. I think it's really important that no matter where your life leads you, you maintain a root system that makes you sturdy and strong for the ages.
It could be friends. Could be family. Or could be that old gnarled tree you used to climb and read books in as a kid.
My girls and I had the pleasure of beginning to plan our 10 year high school reunion.
(Insert laughter here)
See, we were the student government nerds. And the deal was if you were an officer senior year then you practically signed your name in blood that you would help plan all the reunions down the road.So here we are, 10 years later, planning a party that'll blow prom out of the water. (Partly cause we're grownups without curfews or cars that we have to return to our parents.........well, some of us.)
Ten years later is a big deal. Have I accomplished all the things I set out to do? Am I the kind of person I thought I'd grow up to be? I'm trying to avoid all the cheesy Lifetime movie questions that are nagging me, and trying to focus more on the wicked dance sequence I plan on choreographing, ala "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion".
Anyway, it was good to stay up late and giggle and then enjoy how beautiful Virginia is around this time of year. Autumn was always my favorite as a kid. I've always felt most inspired in the month of October.
So to wrap up my favorite creepy month, here's a clip I saw on TV recently. Camille OSullivan singing a sinister Nick Cave song. Perfect for those blustery Autumn nights.

That is a pretty sick tune....I've listened to it about 8 times in the space of an hour.... I'm in the middle of sorting out my primary school (grade school??) reunion... all our pictures have gone up on facebook and I'm talking to people who I haven't seen or heard from in tooooo long. I feel old and I haven't even turned 20 yet! It's great to reminisc though.
The important thing though is that we move on but hold on...if that makes sense??

I couldn't agree more. You and I are the same age Hil and I'm also wrapped up in planning a ten year high school reunion (student council dork and all). Scary. My best friend and I did plan a ten year grade school reunion a few years back since we went to a small Catholic school with the same 45 people for 9 years so I guess it shouldn't be that hard. Although my 3 best friends and I lead very different lives (and two of them actually graduated a year below me) they are my center of gravity most days. I had the honor of standing up in two of their weddings this year and I'm so blessed to still have them all in my life. They've been part of my life for different amounts of time (one since age 5, age 9 and age 15) but I cannot imagine my past, present or future without all of them. Soulmates till the day we die is right. I'm glad you have that same powerful force in your life cause I know it has meant the world to me.

This may seem a little weired..but i had a dream yesterday where i read a blog from SoGoPro saying something had happened to you and you had passed away. I woke up feeling totally depressed and it took me awhile before i realized it was a dream. So my point is, take care of yourself pls? I remember your blog about the 27-year-old curse..wouldnt want that to happen to you!

Sleepovers are the best my best friend is in a different college and to keep us together every two weeks on a friday we have a girls night at my place and do everything that can possibly sound fun and stay up late watch movies and sleep. lol! i love all that. and in 20 daysmy best friend from peru is coming here to visit me! i am so excited i love seeing people that mean a lolt to me!

in my freshman year of college, it's so scary to me to be away from everyone who means so much to me, but this gives me confidence that I'll stay close with the people who mean the most to me.

Thank you for the update as usual it's great to hear what you've been up too and that you're enjoying your life. I'm quiet jealous that you're getting to spend some time up in Virginia during Autumn I love everything about Autumn up north, I live in Florida so unfortunately our Autumn isn't as pretty. But I have friends up in Virginia too so maybe one day I'll be able to enjoy an Autumn day up there too. It's really good to hear that you have such great balance in your life, with all the work you do and still finding some time to visit old friends. I think that's absolutely fantastic. I'm glad you had a good time, I agree that it's good to have a root system of old friends, it's always nice to remember old memories while still making new ones! :] Also I love Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion and I bet you guys will do a fantastic job of making your reunion amazing.
Halloween is my favorite holiday so I was pretty excited throughout October too and as far as the video clip goes, that is deffinately creepy.

im gald you are spending some quality timew with those u love. i have known my best Friend since we were 6; we were the odd kids always talking about ghosts, reading this blog makes me miss her now that i see & talk 2 her husband everyday lol. our 10 yr is half way here i cant wait 2 go back and walk the halls (mainly 2 see if i have grown or if in still shorter than the insignia on the wall lol and maybe see those i dnt talk 2).

wow you remind me so much of me with your lastest post... Autumn is my favourite time of year... i can't wait for it to get here, its the beginning of summer right now and its already really really hot. and hanging out with you bestfriends is the best... i love going home and catching up with them... (2 weeks until uni is finished... YAY then i get to go home) and sometimes me and my bestfriend sarah... who actually lives up in Adelaide with me... we always talk about where we are now and where are friends from high school are... its so weird where you all end up... i remember watching romy and michelle's high school reunion when i was a kid and i think that having a song is super important... my friendship groups song in highschool was 500 hundred miles, it was our roadtrip song. anyway i hope you have a happy halloween... i've never had a halloween, because we dont celebrate it here. is it really as fun as it seems in the movies??

You're so right. It's so important to have foudation and stability with a tight knit group of pals. I'm half way there to a 10 year reunion. And that, that is just so hard to comprehend. Time zips past us. But at least I know I still have my buddies to chill with, beach with, dance with, make-dodgy-as-golden-videos with, and crash with.
Autumn is most definitely my favourite seasonal part of the year. The world is thrown into colour; blanketed with it. Since it doesn't snow here it's the only time everything is veiled.

Just so you know, you will continue to have those very fun slumber parties with your girls even when you turn 30! Those are even better :) It is so funny because when people hear that my best girls are the seven I have from HS, they think it is strange. But there are no other girls I would rather be with. We still laugh about ridiculous things and just have the best time. It is nice that you still take time to do this each year. It is so grounding because those girls knew you when.... we still have a monthly dinner and it is the highlight of our month.
Our 10th was a lot of fun so enjoy yours! Just don't plan anything on a boat or something you can't escape from (our 5th :).

Autumn is an awesome month, and a creepy one.
It is so nice to hear that I am not out dated having slumber parties with friends when possible - we are beginning to think about planning the 18th annivesary of our 18th Birthdays, well ok a couple of years to go yet....but not that long. Christ that makes me sound old!

Hey Hilarie, its good to hear from you!! I think it would be awesome if you did a choreographed dance like one off of Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion.(Very funny movie, by the way!) I honestly can't wait til I'm in my late 20s. Those just seem like some fun years! I really hope I'll still be in touch with my friends. You're such a down-to-earth person, Hil. If every high school reunion had a choreographed dance sequence that would be AWESOME! I still have five years till my 10 year reunion, and I hope to accomplish all the things I've planned on and more during that time. October is my FAVORITE month I've spent it in 3 different states KS, NC, TN and loved every minute of my time in each place, I love the fall festivities plus it my birthday month!

This is all so true. Sometimes it is so easy to fall into your own little world of now and forget where it was you came from and what has always made you happy. I have my three best friends and I do not know what I would do without them. Plus, the best work always comes when you reach back to your roots. my girlfriends and i are 23 and we had a good ole' fashioned slumber party this summer. it was amazing how easy it was to get back into 16 year old girl mode. The only difference was that the wine was in a bottle instead of a box this time around!
but you are absolutely right, great friends are absolutely vital, and my group and i would be lost without each other.

You are SO right Hilarie. It is important to have a base. A foundation from whence you came. A place where people know you, the real you. I am fortunate to have a couple of girlfriends that have been my friends for as long as I can remember. My mom is also one of my besties!
SoGoPro constantly reminds us of what is important in life ... friends, family, music, laughter, inner spirit, knowledge ... as well as creativity and passion in all that we do.
