Winter Poetry Winnings

I don't really need to read poems to get that "holiday spirit" cus I live in sweden, and it hasn't been this much snow since 1977 here. It's like 24 inches of snow, and it's really cold aswell, mayby not this week, only 14 Farenheit... so we in scandinavia got a white christmas! It's fun with a white christmas, but it's not that fun when the snow hangs around a couple more months after...

I really liked the poems that you guys was reading! And cus I don't read poems I don't really have a favorite. Hope you guys had a great holiday and a great new years eve! And I can't wait for the next updates!

Greetings from a snow-covered sweden!

Hey Guys,

Bitumen: Any of various flammable mixtures of hydrocarbons and other substances, occurring naturally or obtained by distillation from coal or petroleum, that are a component of asphalt and tar and are used for surfacing roads and for waterproofing.

Bituminous: Resembling or containing bitumen (possibly referencing bitumen coal as stated before)

Hope that helps, and thanks to you all, I learned a new word today, so thanks. The definitions were courtesy of that magical book called the dictionary. That might be a good book club read sometime, finding Southern Gothic words and such. Now back to the lovely poetry...

When I was younger and I had to write poems in school, I hated it, really hated it. The rhyming and rhythm were too much for me, and I always cringed when my teacher mentioned poetry. Over the years I have come to appreciate it MUCH more, and I could now say that I love it. Listening to it, writing it (still working on that), and finding the meaning behind it. Winter is my favorite time of year and I agree that there is a haunting beauty in it. I'm so glad to live in a place where we get snow, and plenty of it, but experiencing the wonderland through poetry is nice as well. Have a nice day, and keep the good literature coming!

Happy Holidays,

Olivia

Hi Hil and Nick,

Hm, first of all (feel to say: 'you dont know me...':) ) I wish everybody a Peaceful and Fabulous Christmas and Successful Year 2010!!!

Thanks a lot for the lovely poems!!! They make me feel a warm breeze in my frozen heart and body in our cold Norwegian winter (-10degrees and 35-40cm/15-17inch snow)

Bituminous?? regarding to the movie called My Big Fat Greek Weeding it deffinetely comes from a greek word...;) apple maybe?? :D

But I have to agree with newoln:) bituminous comes from the word 'bitumen' which is a black substance made from petroleum.Source: Oxford English dictionary:)

Hope it helped:) and now I would like to wish you a great vacation again and please take your time for the important things! You might regret it later if you dont... that being said reminds me of this part of one of my favorite book The Little Prince from Antoine De Saint-Exupéry:

'The fox gazed at the little prince, for a long time. "Please, tame me!" he said.

"I want to, very much," the little prince replied. "But I have not much time. I have friends to discover, and a great many things to understand."

"One only understands the things that one tames," said the fox. "Men have no more time to understand anything. They buy things all ready made at the shops. But there is no shop anywhere where one can buy friendship, and so men have no friends any more. If you want a friend, tame me..."

"What must I do, to tame you?" asked the little prince.

"You must be very patient," replied the fox. "First you will sit down at a little distance from me, like that, in the grass. I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye, and you will say nothing. Words are the source of misunderstandings. But you will sit a little closer to me, every day..."

The next day the little prince came back.

"It would have been better to come back at the same hour," said the fox. "If, for example, you come at four o'clock in the afternoon, then at three o'clock I shall begin to be happy. I shall feel happier and happier as the hour advances. At four o'clock, I shall already be worrying and jumping about. I shall show you how happy I am! But if you come at just any time, I shall never know at what hour my heart is to be ready to greet you... One must observe the proper rites..." '

Hope you enjoyed it and if you have a little extra time at xmas, read this book - even if you had read it before:)! It gives so much and more...

Big xmas hug,

Lisa

Hey guys,

A really sweet vlog from two of you! Thanks once again & once again Happy Holiday Season...

Today, it's my turn to post a winter poem, i really like it a lot...Hope you also enjoy it...

An Icicle Kiss  by Lonnie Hicks

'I am the Winter Flower'
she said
'the opposite of the Summer Ones.'

'My blooms
peak in deep snow
and I weather
hail, sleet and bitter cold.

My Summer Kin
know the Sun.

I live beneath
White Winter's Glow
withstanding
blizzard wind
as furies blow.

I produce
anti-cold;
survive
winter's
frozen mold.

My petals
are steel-forged
for winter has made
me strong.

My bulb forces it's way
up through frozen ground
and defiant
I face worst Winter's onslaughts.

My petals
fold, unfold
peak,
and stare Winter down.

I am the Winter Flower
beautiful in my Ice Tower.

I too,
have my Ice Prince
who plants upon me
an Icicle Kiss
beneath diamond shining
beautiful,
frosty
Wintry Stars.

See you soon for New Year Greetings for example

I think bituminous is something to do with bitumen, in which case it's kind of like tar, all black and sticky. We've had a white Christmas for the first time in years here in the UK, it's been great! Hope you all had an awesome Christmas and made your icicles! =)

Come on up to Boston and you will see many an icicle and actually for Christmas Day a light snow falling.  How nice!

Merry Christmas guys,

Nicole - Boston

There would be something very wrong if I saw an icicle here.
I really enjoyed those poems.  A real frosty winter just seems so eerie and silent.
A sure difference to what I am accustomed to.

Hmmm...can't quite make out what the word you're saying is, and chances are I have no idea anyway.

Be a DO-er!

Thank you for sharing a bit of Winter poetry with us, living in Florida I have missed out on the snowy weather that my friends up north have been enjoying, in fact it's been even warmer than usual this Christmas season. I love the snow so it's a shame to miss out on it, but the poetry is beautiful and helped me to get in more of a Christmas spirit! :]

Hmm, well i can't hear if you're saying "pituminous" or "bituminous" - if it's the former, i have no idea, if it's the latter, then i'm thinking it might be some sort of adjective coming from "bitumen" as in bitumen coal. Or maybe not!

I must confess, I am personally not a fan of seasonal poems, having had to compose one every three months without fail throughout my entire school career. I remember being assigned an Autumn poem when I was about 15, and submitting one I had written at age 8. I got an A+. (i am not a poetic genious, the bar was just set incredibly low ;).

Not content with writing seasonal poems, we also had to read them. At length. One Winter i seem to recall trudging through a serious of different compositions for weeks, all entitled things like "Ice" or "Frost" or "Snow." Ah, the fun we had!

I think my favorite season is autumn, but I love poetry about winter. I think winter is so romantic, not in the lovey dovey sort of way, but..in..a...I can't even explain it, I like the silence and the stillness of everything. lol But winter is a beautiful time of the year if you live somewhere that it snows. :)
