it's 3pm...

NGray's picture

hello wiseguys and gals.

it's 3pm on a rainy, ugly [not that i mind] saturday, and with bill and ted's bogus journey playing as some background noise, i am finding it the magic hour to find some words...

i've been steadily working on my new play, The Dying Words of Edison Strange, for a little over than a month.  i know i've spoken sparsely on this project before, in that i originally conceived it as what would hopefully be my second film script.  i completed the treatment around the time when i moved back to wilmington, and put writing the script on hold until i felt i would be better positioned in my career to be able to make some use of it. it has remained a story that i think about constantly, which is probably why one magic night i dreamt of it as a stage play.  the story of the original treatment was intended not for the indie filmmaker, but for a major studio, with all kinds of special effects and the like, so to make a legitimate run at writing it as a play, i had to imagine some major adjustments.  it was a slow start, a lot of solo conversations out loud, but Edison Strange is now in a really exciting place.  i intend to grow with each new piece i develop as a writer, and so the challenge i gave to myself here was to write the play in merely two scenes, one for each act.  ayyayyay, indeed a challenge. placing this restriction is one of the greatest labors i could have given myself, as it's the exact opposite of how i naturally write.  [Population: 8 was fifty-five scenes in seventy-five pgs.]  i like montage, i like movement...  whelp, this format didn't help any in getting on the good foot, but another magic day, i figured it all out.  i've committed myself to writing one page per day.  normally, i just write when i dang feel like it, but i like this new way.  it's actually pretty noncommittal in an odd way, and some days i end up with two, three, four, or five pages.  act one of the play has been completed, and i'm about eight pgs. into act two.

one thing about this project that hasn't changed is that i'm writing it for Hilarie.  wouldn't you love to see her on stage?  the character is called Betty Victory (though another friend of mine, and a muse for another role, calls her Betty Victorious, which i may like evermore).  she's a bit of a femme fatale, villainous in a way, and i'll mention too, it takes place in the 40s...  mull on that for a while...

a few days off were taken to tighten the story of our graphic novel project, in order to make it less of a screen story, and more book friendly.  Menton is finishing up work on his current project, and we're in great anticipation for him to begin penning our world!!!

if you and i were friends on facebook, you may have noticed i disappeared, trading in that account for one of the twitter variety.  so come find me over there...

i'm leaking lines of dialogue from The Dying Words of Edison Strange, and other odd bits from the daily grind...   as i become more twitter tech savvy, who knows what'll come...  twitpicsssssss.

i've also got what i expect to be an amazing new website in the works...

Totally awesome things are going on here. Very exciting. Always brightens my days. Even on the rainy one's that make me feel as if I have to stay inside. I love that you have been writing the role for Hilarie, she's incredible, as you know, as we all do. I would love to see her on stage. And also really really excited for the graphic novel! I can't wait. Till next time. <3 Brandal

This is so exciting! I remember hearing about this play/story on one of the podcasts! You guys were asked, which of your characters Nick would each of you want to act out. I believe it was either you or hilarie that mentioned a character from this story. Its great that we're starting to hear about it now. I cant wait to see the finished product. I saw Population 8 and I thought it was FANTASTIC! Seeing hilarie on stage as a villaness, would be very cool to see. We would all get to see her in a new light! Hope all is well!

p.s. The coming soon on your page is very cool, it screams Nick Gray..haha. Mumford and Sons? Hmm, gonna have to check that out! :)

read some of the linked lines on twitter interesting indeed, would love to see Hilarie on stage as a  villainous character. cant wait to read more on this project.

Val

just started following you on twitter and read some of those leaked lines you mentioned...brilliantly crafted writing as always. the new project sounds great (and i daresay hilarie is excited about playing the "villainous" character...we've all heard how much she loves being the bad guy haha). gotta say though, betty victorious is quite superb!

good tip with mumford and sons...they recently topped the much-revered triple j hottest 100 songs of 2009 here in australia. and bill and ted's sounds like the perfect background noise, that's one of my favourite movies.

hope the writing continues to come along well!

Good to hear your new sysematic way of writing seems to be working for you.  But when you 'dang feel like it', is pretty damn tactful as well.

The 1940's!  I'm hooked already!  Brilliant, BRILLIANT era!  I must say Mr Gray I am ever so intrigued, with where you're headed with this one.

Looking forward to seeing this website of yours.

I'm very impatient to read what is " coming soon" Nick!

"The Dying Words of Edison Strange" .. I am already in love with the title. I support you and I am very glad to hear that you have given a role to Hilarie! She sublimates everything.

Love from France,

Lonae.

MUMFORD AND SONS it is. :)

and there is no doubt in my mind that The Dying Words of Edison Strange is going to be amazing! That is so cool that you are writting it for hilarie, i just saw the flashback episode of one tree hill last night, and old school suits Hilarie like mad! It'll blow peoples mind, you are so awesome. Betty Victorious trumps Betty Victory, sorry to tell you :P

nice to hear from you, keep it comming, its always interesting to see what you write, far-out vocab! :)
