Check this link out.

It feels like every other day, a new disaster strikes somewhere on this tiny little planet. We here at SoGoPro believe strongly in "community", and so helping one's neighbor is a no brainer. When I saw this article today, I had to post it. Donating hair??? There are plenty of places to donate money....but for those in our community who have been hit hard during this economy, this seems such a tangible and easy way to help the situation in the Gulf Coast.

Southern Gothic Literature, the very inspiration for our company, is based heavily on the lifestyle afforded to the region by the water that surrounds it. The dance between humidity and breezes, raw oysters with a splash of tabasco on the back porch, frogs singing at night, house boats and fishing lines.......that water allows even the poorest man live like a King, surrounded by beauty and feasts of Southern specialties.

So what can we do? Apparently, the answer is hair! Go on out with a trash bag and bug the salons in your neighborhood. What a Southern Gothic way to make a difference.

Love and Gratitude,

Hil

It is really impressive, amazing! I hope this will help... I was so sorry to hear this new.

Thank you for posting Hilarie, and for your generosity.

Love from France,

Lonae.

In this economy, this is the PERFECT way to give.  Great article and a fantastic way in which all can help

I read this blog a few days ago when it was first posted and have been spreading the word to everyone I know.

Last night or this morning I came across an article on the main Australian news website about it also.

In the article it mentions pet groomers are always donating pet hair, as well as sheep and alpaca farmers. So for all you farmers & pet groomers out there... you can help too!

Using hair to wipe up oil ? it seems really strange but if it really works, whay not? It's actually a really good idea..Everyone can make this kind of donation...To help the others.. what happens on your coasts is horrible.. In france we already suffer many times from this kind of tragedy..because it is.. and  in this sort of situation .. community and solidarity  are the most important thing... We must stand together... I don't know if it's possible for French to give hair in America..but if it is , i'll do it without any doubt..

Sharing on Facebook since I know at least a few people who are stylist/hairdressers and of course I want them to know about this! Thanks so much for letting us know about this Hilarie, I probably wouldn't have heard about it otherwise. :)

This is a brilliant idea. I hope it helps tremendously. I love the fact that its something everyone can help out with. In probably the easiest way. I think its hard for people sometimes to help out in a monetary sense. So it's a great gift to be able to help with something like this. I have a few hairdresser friends, and a friend who owns a horse, so I will be letting the shops and stable in on this!

The Tennessee floods are also quite tragic. The photos of the area, and the Opry are so sad. I haven't come across many sites, other than Red Cross, to donate to. I do know that Terri Clark will be having an Ebay auction with the profits going to the victims of Tennessee.

Thanks for sharing this!

i've been watching the developments on the news gd to hear of some ideas to help out with the mess HAIR!! GENIUS we live in a world with such intertwining matters and sophisticated technology but sometimes all you need to do is look on top of your coconut

Anneliese's picture

There is such a fine line between the needs of the modern world and preservation of the natural world.

Man made accidents are so tragic and the oil spill is catastrophic. Mother nature is clearly unhappy about it too - volcanic ash in Iceland and now the floods..... maybe we need to buy her a nice gift for mothers day!

Lets clean up the planet.

Sad to see the Ole Opry in such a state http://www.opry.com/news/2010/05-03.html

Hello Hilarie, hello all.

- Why not, this idea,  the little water course make big river..:)

- I Am afraid too about what it’s happening in our little planet. Can you Imagine that: In south France, today, May 6, temp no more 6°C (42F°), snow fall 50cms (1.5ft) in low south mountain  at 500M alt)..whaouuu !!!. L

- About the oil clash in south US, here in France, we follow, day after day, this drama, because unfortunatlly, in France we know what oil slick is, (during 80’ and 90’many tankers sink in the channel).

- Hilarie: what about southern gothic literature? Can you (or somebody else) inform me about books or novels dealing with that?

:D Thats cool! I'm sorry about the oil disaster near your coast... we had one like this few years ago, and all the people move together to help the people from this area, thousand of volunteers! was awesome!

But Ive never heard about the hair is the better way! Hope everything will be ok! I'm pretty sure of that!

Lau.

well...that is odd, i would never think that donating something like your hair would help to clear the water of oil.

it is very cool though

:)

Looks like the same thing is going on in Boston.  Not something I ever would have thought of but all the power to these people.

My children's lit. teacher just told my class about this the other day, i think its amazing! They are making hair mattresses and they are soaking up all of the oil in oil spills, then they can just ring them out and re-use them! hair isn't just another pretty thing :) yay us!

Also wanted to point out that the flooding in Tennessee has been devastating. Help where you can folks. You're a powerful army!

princesslyss2878's picture

Thanks for the TN mention! I know a few people who live there that say it's just a mess right now. I'm supposed to go down there to the CMT awards in June and I'm not too sure what the status of my trip is. Everything is flooded. This is the city now...so sad :( http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=all&q=nashville+flood&m=text

Speaking of Tennessee...if you happen to glance this over Hilarie...Billy Currington came up on my iPod today and I thought of you :) Love that this blog came out during my birthday week! Hooray!...Enough rambling from me.

Alina V's picture

wow!  Well there you have it.

The knowledge that there is a way to sweep up the oil spreading through the ocean, gives me a little more hope towards the damage that has been created.

Be a DO-er!

Very interesting! Thanks, Hil for a wonderful blog! I'm getting my hair cut pretty soon, so I will definitley let them know about this. Who cares if they give me weird looks, lol, I'm used to it!

HILARIE!!! you have been missed! Wait...Collect hair?! I could just imagine the look on my parents face if I told them I was collecting hair! Sounds interesting but kind of weird at the same time! Too bad they dont take dog hair...well...don't know if they do actually. My dog sheds like mad and I could collect clumps of basset hound hair! haha! Hope you're doing well. Thanks for sharing this with us. -Lissy

well i just chopped my hair off yesterday!! perfect timing. I suppose I'll have to let the salon know about this if they don't already..

whitney-marie's picture

WOW! this is a great post Hilarie. I have never heard of anything like using hair to wipe up oil before. To clean up something like oil would take a long time and it would be very expensive so using hair like rugs as a sponge so to speak, pretty smart. that's pretty cool I mean if you really think about it we do take hair for granted sometimes. We all get hair cuts and then we just toss it out with the garbage. We tend to do that with a lot of other things too. plus, that's someones home thats someones drinking water and if that was my home I would hope someone would be kind enough to lend a hand too. I think this shows that we do have a lot of use for things like hair and we should think twice before we just toss it out. There are little things we can do to help others & our planet we just have to get creative. Small things can make a big difference.

I am defiantly going to help out! =]p
