Book Club, how I've missed thee!!!

I'm on a kick folks!

We haven't had book club in a bit, and that's my fault. It does not mean, however, that i have ceased reading voraciously. In fact, it's been a spring of very good books!

Started out with A.S. Byatt's "The Children's Book". Very big. Very British. Very whimsical. Very good. I highly recommend it if you're the sort who likes to follow a character through 10 or 20 years of their life. I love forming an intimate friendship with characters in novels, and Byatt provides no veils for the people who populate her written world.

But that is not why we're here. I saw in a book review...Harpers or maybe Vanity Fair...the description of a biography on Patricia Highsmith. Now if you don't know Highsmith, she's the woman who wrote Hitchcock's "Strangers on a Train" as well as all the "Talented Mr. Ripley" novels. I hadn't read any of her work before, but the biography, "The Talented Miss Highsmith" sounded really dark and interesting.....just how we like it here at Southern Gothic.

So, I picked the book up...all 20 lbs of it. Like the Byatt novel, this one is is a beast of a book. I'm not sure I like how the set up of the book was structured. Instead of following Highsmith's life chronologically, the author bounces around back and forth between old age, young adulthood, childhood, professional life and private affairs. It results in a redundant read, but even so, with Highsmith as the subject matter, I stayed curiously invested in her life story. If you're not interested in all the particulars of her existance, here's the basic gist.....

Highsmith had a love hate relationship with her mother, who was a beautiful and wildly dramatic woman. Her mother left her to live with her stern grandparents in their Southern home while she moved North and remarried. Highsmith, always too smart for her own good, seemed to resent everything around her, and everyone. It's strange reading the biography of someone who seems to not have ANY redeemable qualities! She drank too much. Smoked too much. Said rude things too often. Cheated and lied to lovers. Two thirds of the way through the book, I got tired and didn't want to glorify someone who was so loathsome anymore. I didn't get what all the hype was. Was she SO talented that it made up for her often selfish and destructive behavior?

(sidenote** Highsmith got her start writing for comic books - considered back then to be bastardized literature. But it gave her a keen sense of action and pace in her storytelling. Perhaps I was interested in her career path, given WE are working on our graphic novel and hoping it parlays into something larger)

The only thing I could do was read one of her books. I didn't want to go for the more mainstream novels, like the ones I mentioned before. So I picked up, "The Price of Salt".

Image

The deal with this book, is that Highsmith was so paranoid about it, she published it under a different name. Highsmith was a lesbian, and a brave one at that, because she didn't shy away from telling stories from her viewpoint. But this book hit a little too close to home, and she feared folks would think it was autobiographical.

Wherever she got her inspiration from, it worked. And yes, she is as good as all the hype! There's nothing seedy or exploitative in this novel. It wasn't a story written for shock value during a time when gay or lesbian literature was still a taboo. It's about a girl who is taken by an older woman she helps while working in a department store. The story follows their friendship as it grows into something more...a kindredness that is sweet and warm that becomes painfully hard to make sense of as external influences take their toll.

Very quickly, gender loses it's importance in this story. Highsmith so perfectly captures the ACHE of being in love with someone. I was sucked in by that feeling, and reminded of my first heartbreak at 14. She must have been a walking wound to make art like this.

I was won over. Wicked as she was, this woman could write!

As a followup, I picked up "Edith's Diary". I finished it last night. I'm still nervous as a result.

Image   This book follows Edith as her life falls apart. And while the world disintegrates around her, her diary becomes her sanctuary, a place that she can control and turn into a happy reprieve from the disappointment of reality. It is so perfectly crafted! Edith never bemoans her life, and it is not until her circle of friends start worrying about her that the reader steps back and reexamines all that has happened. I'm stuck nicely in a feeling of bewilderment. The character of Edith never seemed crazy to me. Highsmith makes her so practical. And yet there is a subconscious build toward madness. It's so good. So damned good. I really hope some of you give these books a go.

I guess Highsmith reminds me of that kid in school that never says a word and scowls from the desk in the back...the one who rejects everyone else before they can be rejected.....the disinterested one who you know secretly has something huge to offer. So this book club goes out to all those torn up souls.

Hope all you readers out there have a great week!

Hil

Hi Hilarie,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It's obvious that you love to read because your writing is so colorful and vibrant. I hope that one day YOU will write a book because I think you have it in you.

You have inspired me to read for pleasure again (college nearly killed my love for reading), and I wanted to suggest an author to you - Jill McCorkle. She's from North Carolina and you can tell very quickly in her novels. I've read a couple of her books, and I just started Final Vinyl Days. Anyway, they are pretty light reads which you may appreciate after those others you read in the spring.

I hope you are doing great, and maybe our paths will cross one day if you are still in the Wilmington area. I live in Raleigh but spend a lot of time down there, too!

Take care,
Laura

Dear Ms Burton,

Enjoyed your blog on Patricia Highsmith.  You have a wonderful style in your reviews.  You seem to be able to get into the "head" of the author and then try to understand their writings from their perspective?  It is just another one of your many talents.

How has your "children's book" progressed?  I haven't seen anything to suggest it is complete, but where is that project?  Please give us a "status report"?

I know the graphic novel project has been "rocky"?  Will it, when completed, be the basis for a movie or TV project for yourself or others?

Have a great Summer.  I know July is a favorite month of yours with your birthday and the Independence Day (July 4) holiday coming at the beginning?  Best wishes for continued success in all you do.

Thanks for the update Hil! I was in Wilmington 2 weeks ago and picked up a couple of books from Two Sister's Brewery while shopping - cute store. I liked that I got the 15 % off there too - always good to save some money. I am in the middle of reading "You can't start drinking if you don't start in the morning" Very Funny!!! I'm going to be sad when I'm done with it. I will have to get some more of her books!

Edith's Diary sounds like an interesting one. When I am done with theses books I guess I will have to head over to a Barnes and Noble and get it!

I just love your blogs Hilarie. They are always full of life and excitment...lol. I am in the middle of a book right now, but when I finish I am for sure going to give these books a look at. If they are as good as you say they are, I know I am gonna love them.

XoXo Kait

Its so nice to hear from you again, I haven't been on in a while, I've been extremely busy with Rugby and school. So I appologize. But I hope to make it up to you, I'm coming to Wilmington this summer, all the way from Ontario, Canada. I will be stopping at the Two Sisters Bookery and picking up these books, i really hope they are there when I come in July.

Thanks Again, hope to see you soon :) --Loren

I am reading this now and it is really good.  Extremely intricate with all the different characters and storylines but you definitely are looking forward to each page.  Although there are close to 700 pages so I am curious how this ends!

Of course, I tend to read a lot of books while watching my Red Sox play so that might have something to do with the fact that it can at times be hard to follow:).

However, I would recommend this read to all of your out there.

thanks for bringing the book club back =) i too missed these. summers here which means i finally have time to read (outside of school that is)!!!! the most exciting time of year! i've made myself a hefty goal for the summer, to read through the classics section, but i also am planning to make time for the SoGoPro book choices too!

This one sounds quite interesting, the author that is. Dark and twisty definitely makes for great stories. The Edith's Diary in particular sounds much like The Bell Jar, another fantastic dark and twisty book. Anyways, welcome back book club =) And congrats Hilarie!

I love so much SOGOPRO book club...

Reading is a very important thing in my life. I always try to identify with characters, to form a part of their world. It is my pleasure, and a sort of relief. I can't explain this. I feel the same thing when I watch a movie. It was magic with One Tree Hill, I wished I were Peyton's best friend, I wished such friendship could exist and such love too. Life and death visions. Music and Literature powers. Art power. And destiny.

I am going to buy Edith's Diary. You are so good as a book reviewer Hilarie! I would like to be able to say more than that, but my English is too bad.

Love from France,

Lonae.

Dear Hilarie,

I was just thinking the other day about the book club. I missed it so much!

Thanks for posting it, really made my day ;)

I love reading your thoughts about books. I'm hoping for some vlog entry soon though ;)

xoxo,

Caroline

i think i'll give the biography a miss in preference of her novels haha, but indeed the novels themselves sound enthralling, especially "Edith's Diary". i'll add it to my reading list!
as a side note, i went looking for some books last weekend and couldn't find "Dandelion Wine" anywhere, but i'll keep searching for that one too.
thanks!

As ever a pleasure to hear from you Ms Burton. It is great to see you are still devouring books, I just don't seem to have enough minutes in the day at the moment to take any book out and get further than the prologue. Of all your suggestions,  I think Edith's diary sounds appealing and I like the sound and idea of "The Childrens Book", British and Whimsical - fabulous!

Dear Hilarie & All,

Patricia Highsmith is indeed an incredible writer and one of my favorite female writers of all time. She spoke out loud about subjects that were taboos back then and did all that with a little bit of black humor. Sadly, she's no longer with the world, but her novels, short stories will be somewhat iconic forever!

xoxo,

Kasia

I feel so far behind already.  I'm quite a book worm this past couple of months!! I just ordered and received "Dandelion Wine" and "The Fountainhead."  I just have to finish one more book before I get to start either of those.  But thanks for keeping it alive.  I was wondering if this might have died a death or not....I'm not more than a month old on this site and still love every bit of the site!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for doing the great work and I can't wait to see what more there is to come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for the new Book club blog Hilarie, it was well worth the wait.

All of the books sound like interesting reads. I am currently on Amazon UK looking for the "The Price of Salt" which is sold under Highsmith's "other name" Claire Morgan. Will be ordering TPOS & Edith's Diary very soon. Will come back with my opinions on the books afterwards.

Hope you have a lovely week Hilarie!

Hil,

This update just made my day! I've been working on trying to get Book Club books done but I seem to be stalled on page 50 of William Gay's Twilight! You've got me intrigued with the Patricia Highsmith books. I also enjoy getting to see the world through the eyes of a character and forming a relationship with them over a course of time. I think I've got some new reads to enjoy on my down time. Also...had no idea Mr Ripley was a book series...the movie was majorly confusing! Thanks so much for updating and giving some more recommendations! Hope you're having a great day!
