Come up on our porch. There's a nice breeze. Tea's brewin'.
I believe you made that rabbit costume you wore so well at my high school party.
Carol, I enjoyed the interview, and I wish you all the success in the world. Please join FB so we can catch up with you. If I don't hear from you, know that I still sometimes look back and laugh my butt off at the silly times we had.
A whole world just opened up for me. It was such an interesting interview. Thank you Carol & KT! You don't realize until you hear something like this what it takes to do a certain job in the film industry. And I've been noticing more and more how important it is how the actors look, what they wear. And it sounds like SUCH a busy job - wow! Found it esp. interesting when you explained that you can walk into a store and see if that would fit with someones skin or if it photographs well, etc. Very, very interesting. So thanks!
"hero props" are hand props that feature prominently in a script line - by their nature - have multiple departments that weigh in on that - lots of meetings about what it is, whose budget is it gonna come out of - and who actually hands carries it and puts it on the actor before the scene on the right shoot day
If I couldn't do theatre/film as a performer, I would be a costume designer!! I myself might not have the best fashion, but my wardrobe is maturing and I love looking for new, fabulous styles. I love putting outfits together! Costume designing is underrated, I think. It takes a lot of thought to make sure that a certain outfit goes with the right character. Loved this interview, KT!! Carol is a fantastic designer and does a great job on all her projects!
Great interview KT!! Carol has worked on some pretty cool films :) I never realized how much work goes into a show! When she was talking about the dresses in Date Night it seemed like the dress had a role of its own!! Thanks to Carol and you KT for bringing us these interviews!!! -Lissy
When I learnt the next industry interview was going to be involved in the world of a Costume Designer, I have to admit, I got a little bit excited.
It was great to hear what Carol had to say. It brings so much more awareness to the role that people don't quite realise.
I loved that you brought up the whole notion that you need to always be aware of what will translate on camera. I remember reading up on films from the 1920's. Now as you know, all of those films are in black and white, and the costumes created weren't about the way they looked, but how the textures and embellishments picked up on screen. They could have been the most ugliest assortment of colours and patterns, but the way they converted to black and white...that's what was important. And for me one of the most fascinating facts of all is when films were first being made it was generally the actors that provided the clothing. Unless it was a period piece, or they required uniforms. For the contemporary storeies, the actors wore, made or purchased their own clothing. It's crazy to think that it was such a throw it together sort of mix.
It was great to hear how Carol got into the business, and I can't wait to hear what she has to say for the next installment.
Thank you for agreeing to be interviewed for the Industry Interviews Carol :)
I really loved this interview. I would never have even thought of there being a difference between wardrobe, costume designer, costumers etc! Very interesting. Really enjoyed hearing exactly what is involved in the role of costume designer. Often people like me who aren't within in industry don't think of things such as what works well on camera, in photos etc but as you said it comes to you naturally when shopping now. You do an amazing job on One Tree Hill!!
Cheers again for the interview, I look forward to Part Two! :)
Wow, great interview! thank you so much for sharing all the insights.
Never thought of it being so complicated, having to check the clothes by so many people! You really have to think about a lot of different aspects here, glad that it comes to you naturally already!
Carol, I have to say that I love your work! You've done a great job dressing our beloved characters so far!! :)
Thank you so much for this interview! Kt, keep them coming! ....looking forward to hearing more about the props!!! you made me curious.
Carol this is an awesome role and one that we as an audience take so for granted! Wardrobe mistress sounds very theatrical! Love the aspect of getting the time of the day right re: costume... There is so much of the character that comes out through the clothes, such a vital role......
Keep it up we love these interviews, Carol this is an awesome insight into a world we never see, thanks so much!

Great reminder of all the work/details/people required in production, behind the big box-office names, that often get overlooked.
I love that she would "chop-shop" thrift-store Levi's for her friends. My friends and I used to do the same thing.
I still need to see Date Night.
I'm curious why BDavis's ring is a prop...
