a pedestrian journey - chapter one.
i am living in new york city. (that's a lie. i am living in prospect park, brooklyn.) i am living in new york. i got here nine months ago with two surcharged suitcases and a relationship in foreclosure. i am going to be an actor.
though i have accumulated $70,000 of post-collegiate debt, i am to be considered one of the lucky ones because for all due purposes, i live in new york, and i have a job that pays roughly $18/hr., and i don't sleep in a closet. my landlord is an eastern european gent who requests that i pay him in cash, and sometimes that i join him for vodka. i have three wonderful friends whom i travel through my days with, only one of which would i take a bullet for. my roommate's mother has taken me under her wing, a pattern in my life i am learning to adapt to. i date infrequently. i ride the q train for 33 minutes to go to work. i work. i ride the q train for 46 minutes to come home. i read a lot of plays. i watch every movie that billy crudup has ever made. i learn how to act. i do the same with mary-louise parker. i learn how to act. i am going to be an actor.
i ride the q train for 33 minutes to go to work. i work. and as i work, it occurs to me, much sharper than i would prefer, that i am not going to be an actor. i ride the q train for 46 minutes to come home, and each of those minutes are spent thinking of my friends and acquaintances from school that have achieved a semblance of accomplishment towards their artistic goals, and again, it occurs to me - a-ha! - none of them work. i make a pact with myself, as young fools do, that i will save as much money as possible in the next month, and then i will quit my job. three and a half months later, i quit my job. i am going to be an actor.
a friend of mine gets me an (unpaid) internship with one of the best casting agencies in new york. for eight hours a day, i open hundreds of unsolicited talent queries. i file them to remain unseen by anyone with clout. i shatter dreams. my hands are riddled with paper cuts. i watch 74 people audition for a combos commercial, a verizon commercial, a wamu commercial. i listen to 47 people sing "light my candle." i get leftover tickets to broadway shows. three months later, my time there is scheduled to end. i am rewarded with a stipend and a ten-minute mentorship with the head honcho. i am asked to stay on for longer. i don't. i am going to be an actor.
i audition. every day. i wake up at 5:00 am, get clean, ride the q train for 44 minutes to the actors' equity center in times square, wait in line for two hours, am finally let inside to wait anywhere from an hour to eight hours with the hope of being seen. for those of you that haven't tried this strange life, this is how it works for the neophytes, the non-union actors. you wait. you wait. you hope. you wait. and sometimes you get to audition, and mostly you don't. i know 26 monologues that i can recite at the drop of a hat. i know 14 accents, twice as many with a week's notice. i live in as much seclusion as possible. i am sad. i am going to be an actor.
i marginally succeed. i book everything that doesn't matter. i don't book everything that matters. i wait. i wait. i hope. i wait. and one day, while i am waiting, i begin to write. a fellow rookie, a few rookies down from me in line, is drinking a gallon of milk. a gallon, really? actors... i write a scene that involves a gallon of milk. i write a scene that involves one hundred umbrellas; this eventually gets scrapped. i write a scene that involves the girl of everyone's dreams. and soon everyday, i am writing while waiting, and waiting becomes less like waiting. i don't mean to, but i stop auditioning. i have a new friend. his name is lincoln booth. he is me, and he is not going to be an actor.
yours.

Wow. I recently joined SoGoPro and am new, and/or slow, at finding all the things this website has (all of which are AMAZING).
This chapter is fantastic! It has me hooked already! I am going to read the rest of the chapters now. This is really Great work.
Your film is definitely going to be brillant ! Can't wait to read the next chapter!
Thank you Nick for coming into the SoGoPro Chat last night and talking to us about Mona. She is a very mysterious woman ... ambitious in so many ways!
I just wanted to let you know that you are a dear and you shouldn't sell yourself short when it comes to your prose. You are incredible writer ~ believe that! We can't wait for more from you!!!!!
Smiles,
Angie
Thank you Nick, for a beautiful written entry. It's so great to read a little bit more about the origins of Pedestrian. I can only imagine all the other actors in the same boat as you back in New York.
Anyway, Pedestrian gets better and better everytime I hear more about it. As I've said before, I'm very excited for you and the rest of SGP with Pedestrian.
Hope there is a Chapter 2. :)
This was really interesting Nick! I can't wait to see the next chapter. It's amazing how while folllowing one dream someone can stumble upon something completely unexpected that changes their life and the path they're on.
what a wonderful piece.
so very excited to read more!
Amazing Nick, I'm glad you're keeping us involved. I love being included in the story. The more you tell us about Lincoln, the more we begin to learn about his character. Austins got good shoes to fill. Awesome Nick, thanks again for sharing.
Maybe we'll learn about Mona soon??
Can't wait to read more...
and know more about Lincoln... and also about Mona!
:)
Captivating... and thank goodness for the WAITING... without it we wouldn't have a Licoln Booth and Mona Mills!!! :)
It's a pleasure to read it but now, I'm waiting for the chpater 2.
It's so great, it's become harder now to wait for the film... You're gonna kill us all, who have said that we are that much patient?
Thanks a lot for this text (and waiting for the next)
Jay
Ahhhh ... the life of a want-to-be actor. Excellent read so far! Much like Lincoln, I will be waiting and waiting and hoping and waiting ... for the next installment! Without said gallon of milk ... :)
Did you know that it is impossible to drink a gallon of whole milk in one hour? I've seen many attempts ... none of them with very pretty results! I hope you have a happy day!
Smiles,
Angie
Awesome writing, Nick!! Can't wait for chapter two :)
Nick,
I like this 1st chapter. I was able to know more about the main character. I like how you describe in detail what it is going in : his head, his surroundings.
Thanks for sharing
Love the writing style!! Can't wait to read more. Post more please!!!

Nick!
That was awesome, you have me yearning for more.
The fact that you can write that amazingly makes me a tad jealous. The way you tell things, just amazing.
Please give us more!

Wow, this is a kind of writing that I love! It's mysterious and it just makes me want to read more and more...You are doing an awesome job Nicholas, thanks for sharing it! :)
Loved it,identified with it, can't wait for more!! =)
Your ability to write this well is awe-inspiring, I cannot tell you how much I envy you that gift. I have tried, for some time, to create characters in this way, but have not been able to translate my feelings about them into words for others to read.
Thank you for sharing, I hope that we might read more in the future.

Thanks for sharing this with us, Mr. Nick Gray!
The chapter ending compels me to turn the page and keep reading ...
Wow, Nic, that was amazing. I knew you were talented, but I had no idea just how talented you really were! That was written beautifully; I loved your simplistic language and how easily it flowed. I only hope that someday I'm even half as good a writer as you are.
~Now a HUGE fan

This is fantastic, I'm very hooked by the style of writing. And also, nice shout out to the landlord...they are always the most interesting people and should not be overlooked anymore!
Last week I listened to a podcast of 'This American Life', which coincidentally kinda dealt with this. "Most of us start off our lives with some Plan A which we abandon...switching to a Plan B, which becomes our life."
As I get older, I start to realize this is so true. But what if plan B turns out to be better than plan A could ever be? Welcome the unexpected, all we have is this moment, right now. cheers
wow. nick your writing really is amazing. i am dying to hear more!
chapter 2 anyone? =]
love always,
Nicole T
Wow. hope your excited to get that kind of reaction to everything your write - because you will. how did you learn to write like that. its such a great journey..powerful. such enigma around your play..how much longer till you make it?!!!!
I've came to work this morning, tired and sad because is monday again... and I've went to check the blog and I've discovered this new blog...
Suddenly, I'm trapped by the writing and I'm in NY, seeing this guy while he waits for the q train, I can feel his determination, his insecurities, his apathy and his passion. Best 10 minutes of my day... thanks Nick, btw, are you this guy?
Kisses from Spain.
Omg thats really good look forward to read more :)
Chapter 2??
Very wicked writing Nick!
WOW !

I totally get why Hilarie Burton thinks you're a brilliant writer. I can't wait to read more of your stuff! And at some point (before or after the film) please post your script online. Reading great scripts is a joy.
what a great post!! Looking forward to the next chapter. Love back stories and this provides great insight to "LB's" journey.
This is awesome! Can't wait to see what happens in the next chapters :)

Wow, Nick, your writing is beyond excellent. This was quite mysterious and a great read.
Does this mean there is going to be a chapter 2? Can't wait!

Definitely need to hear more. Great writing.
~Amber
Excellent writing. Can't wait to read more. Chapter 2 soon please!!!
This kind of spoke to me. I'm not going to be an actor, nor is that what I have asprirations to be. I want to be a teacher, and while I did succeed in that goal slightly, it still feels like a struggle to reach what I know I was meant to do.
I can't wait to read more. :)
Love it! Looking forward to reading more...
wow, that sounded awesome. looking froward to chapter 2, etc. etc.
GREAT...writing! I want to read more! CHAPTER 2 please?
this life sounds very daunting....
