eureka!

kt's picture

earlier this week on the day of st. patrick, the sogopro team was gifted a video collabo from the fans. i'll tell you what. that video was a real ace.

so it seems we have inspired you. wowsa! we love that. a lot. here's some things that have inspired me of late. i like things.

1. hilarie lent me a copy of les fleurs du mal, a collection of dark and stirring poems from charles baudelaire. she told me with a stern hand not to let anything happen to it. i definitely didn't let anything happen to it. on the darkness meter, the one below is a mid-grade, but still my favorite of the bunch. owls are the new it animal.

2. the movie blindness. i believe this movie had some poor reviews [yep. only 40% on the tomato-meter], but i liked it immensely. this will sound strange coming from a screenwriter i imagine, but i have a really hard time watching movies. at home, at least. it takes a lot to make me watch a film in one sitting. it takes snacks, definitely. i'm a snack master. but, yes, blindness. i watched it in one fluid sitting. i'll recommend it. mark ruffalo is usually representing, and this is no exception. i'd also equally recommend synecdoche, new york, even though i still haven't finished it, and have been watching in twenty minute intervals over the past three days. monster cast. nuanced performances. and it's written and directed by charlie kaufman; he wrote and directed eternal sunshine of the spotless mind.

3. i first caught wind of the photographer chris anthony during his series "victims and avengers," for which both emily and zooey deschanel were models. his prints are spellbinding, and truly, my cup of tea.

4. one of my new year's resolutions [i've already completed two] is to get some art on my walls. i haven't been anywhere near successful on this task yet, so i ordered a book online called between the lines: a coloring book of drawings by contemporary artists. i figure that while my friends are just trying to watch my television, i'll throw the book and a box of crayons in front of them, and eventually i'll have a fine collection of contemporary art for the kitchen. here's a creeeeeepy one i did...

5. one last little crumb, here's a snap of me looking real suspicious in my new tee, my ode to lincoln b.

NEVOEIRO
Nem rei nem lei, nem paz nem guerra,
define com perfil e ser
este fulgor baço da terra
que é Portugal a entristecer –
brilho sem luz e sem arder,
como o que o fogo-fátuo encerra.

Ninguém sabe que coisa quere.
Ninguém conhece que alma tem,
nem o que é mal nem o que é bem.
(Que ância distante perto chora?)
Tudo é incerto e derradeiro.
Tudo é disperso, nada é inteiro.
Ó Portugal, hoje és nevoeiro...

É a Hora!

This is by Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa. I can't quite capture the essence of his writing in English, but J. Griffin was able to http://pintopc.home.cern.ch/pintopc/WWW/FPessoa/MFog.html

enjoy,

Hey, I didn't know that kind of coloring book exist! THANKS VERY MUCH!:D I'm one of those who actually keeps a coloring book 'cos you know, creativity usually strikes when you're bored ;)

BTW just a suggestion, why not try using pastel colors instead. That's what I use for coloring and drawing, they're more vibrant :D

I'm probably in the minority when it comes to reading poetry, it's not that I don't like it, just that I find it hard to understand. I don't know whether you have to have a special gift to be able to read them or just be really smart with words. If anyone has any suggestions of books that help you understand poetry better, please share. :) I love reading, read all the time, but yeah, poetry confuses me.

Also, that print from photographer Chris Anthony: Wow, I would frame it and hang it up on my wall if I could.

Thanks for sharing with us the things that inspire you Nick.

Thanks for allowing us more into the mind of Nick Grey.

I wasn't a big fan of poetry, but lately I have been thinking I should read some. The "Les Fleurs du Mal" might be my first poetry book.

Mark Ruffalo is one of my favorite actors. I've wanted to see Blindness for a while, but haven't gotten a chance to get it. Now Im even more intrigued to see it considering it was able to keep you still throughout the whole thing. Quite and accomplishment..haha. I'll let you know what I think once I get a copy.

That picture isn't creepy at all, its just different. I like the whole idea of having friends color in the picture. Very creative, and I gives the pictures some sentimental value.

Thanks for sharing some of the things that inspire you. =)

Can't wait to hear more.

Thank you for sharing your inspirations!

I'm actually doing an analysis on Baudelaire at the moment. It's about how in the book, beauty passes by so quickly at times, and is eternal at others. Anyways, "Les Fleurs du Mal" is a pure jewel! The spleen/ideal part is probably the one that is most inspiring to me. I also recommend "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath.

The t-shirt is awesome and I love the coloring book idea! While you're not a movie person, I would really recommend "Harold and Maude". Ever since I heard about the character Mona, I've been thinking about this movie. Give it a try: a seventeen year old boy who tried to commit suicide multiple times befriends a seventy-nine year old woman who lives life at its fullest.

Thank you again for sharing your thoughts!

Nick,
thank you for sharing all the new inspirations that you get thru:
1) a great French Poet
2)Photography
3)Movie
4)Coloring book so you can cover your walls with drawings
5)Cool T-shirt

There is a movie that I would like to refer that is great: It is called "The Red Violon" with Samuel L Jackson as one of the actors. The movie is about following the history about the violon (from when it was created, to his numerous owners and to his final sale at a Christie's auction) I have seen it a couple time between because it seems like the violon is a person. Please consider watching it. A++

Thanks for sharing all your thoughts

Les Fleurs Du Mal is one of my favorite books of poetry! Granted I’ve only read a couple others (my other favorites are by Sylvia Plath and Louise Erdrich), but it is amazing! My French teacher had a copy in her classroom and saw me reading it (I’m lazy.. so I was just reading the English translations. lol), so she let me borrow it for a week. Let’s just say I never wanted to return it, but I did reluctantly. Soon after I read it, I ended up buying my own copy. Baudelaire is a genius. His poems are beautiful, vivid, dark and compelling. He describes feeling and emotion like no one I have ever seen. I definitely recommend Les Fleurs Du Mal to everyone. A few of my favorite poems are Elevation, Hymn to Beauty, Hymn, Obsession and The Ghost, but I like the entire collection.

Thanks for sharing what inspires you Nick. I think owls are awesome and I love coloring books (especially creepy contemporary ones). I also think the t-shirt rocks. :)

<3 kels

Oh Nick , Les Fleurs du mal is wonderful. Baudelaire is beyond words !
Great post , it's fun to read him in English.

Oh yeh Charles Baudelaire, a famous french writer
In France we study his poems, there are a lot of beautiful words in these poems

I think you have just inspired a coloring book project!! Such a great idea, wish I had thought of it.

And yay for the new...mascot? No longer the wolves, we're moving onto owls (woot woot, ha).

Thanks for the awesomeness, Nicholas ;-)

I love Mark Ruffalo but haven't seen Blindness. Curious to watch it now... hmmm...

-Raquel

you guys definately inspire me! i only started drawing again after i started reading your blogs, cos i never thought i was good enough before. but seeing you guys have so much love and passion for this (and not for the money bit) inspired me to start again.
anyways, i caN totally understand the not being able to watch movies in one go. i have to watch them like 5 times cos i always stop following it half way through!!!

Thank for giving us more things to find our own inspiration in. I love the T-Shirt. I also like the idea of having my friends color the art for my walls. Could make it that much more special. Thank you for being a source of inspiration to us all.

Kim

The drawing is not creepy at all. Kinda reminds me of the beatles, don't know why.

Those Chris Anthony photos are cool (and creepy), thanks for pointing us in his direction. Zooey Deschanel is one of my favorite actor/singers.

And suspicious you are in that T-shirt. hehe.

charles baudelaire un artiste torturé..
you should read l'invitation au voyage and l'horloge the two most famous poem of baudelaire

naima from france

Nick-
the coloring book thing is a fantastic idea...here's another one that some family friends of mine do: they have a wooden bench seat table in their kitchen, and they have a wood burning tool kit...every time someone new comes to their house they have them sign their name. It's a rad new-age antique that I plan to adopt when I have my own digs.

that shirt is awesome =]

i love the poem. poetry is constantly inspiring me. I'm hoping to find another good poetry book. any suggestions? I will definitely keep a look out for that one.

the art coloring book is a great idea too. love it!

love always,
Nicole T

when i think, when i was a student,i hate the poet beaudelaire, and now i have 40 years and i try to read this book i said i must be crazy and thank you hilary for that
loic

Hahaha. I love that you bought a coloring book so you can decorate your walls. That's amazing! ;P

The world is made of it .. inspiration ...
Is this not why we go to meet others? To draw from them what fuel our own existence?

I must say: I love the flower man. Not creepy. Spring Fair. Very a-propos in this day!

And Charles Baudelaire is the best French poet. It should be read in the text, in French. The words flow on the pages. French is beautiful in his hands.

so many inspirational gifts in this world. one persons trash may be another artists' "cup of tea" you so boldly put it.
i don't know if you'll understand this from your perspective, but southern gothic productions has brought back my creativity. i've been sitting in a slum lately, but with the haiku & limerick contests, i've been starting to get back in the saddle. i'm slowly making my way back where i used to be.
also, i've seen those photos of emily & zooey. zooey has been in some of my favorite movies. shes truly amazing.
but thank you for sharing this with us and taking time off from your busy life to keep us included.
-maygen

Everything you guys have posted has inspired so many things in us, so its good to hear that we can give some inspiration back.

I actually like the idea of having your friends create your art, it's like a part of them is with you everyday. You never know the hidden talents they might have.

I echo G and say Thanks~
