The Pillowman is a 2003 play by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh. An especially dark black comedy, it tells the tale of Katurian, a fiction writer living in a police state who is interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories, and their similarities to a number of bizarre child murders occurring in his town....

I think it's perfect bedtime reading material... YIKES!!!

Enjoy Hilarie and Nick,

Just Read This Play, Its So Good, I Couldn't Put It Down, Read It In 3 Hours, Beautifully Written Even If It Is Fascinatingly Dark And Twisted.

Thanks For Sharing.

I have been following this blog for quite sometime, but have never commented before. I have actually read this play (I am a freak who reads plays) it is dark, disturbing and I loved it. Great choice, and seeing as I am first time posting, you guys rock! Thank you so much for putting a smile on my face most days.

Adding it to the "SoGo must read list!"
Thanks Guys, you always manage to put a huge smile on my face!

It's very difficult for me to comment all your articles because of the "language barrier", but I'm following the SGP team through the blog every day.
I'm going to try to read this book.. in your description it's seems to be very dark but your reading is very funny, amazing, and it inflames curiosity!

So in the past month or so, I have done so much reading. Seriously, I dont think I've read so much, I always used sparknotes in high school haha. But now I'm actually reading and enjoying it. So thanks guys :] But I wont lie, I like when you guys read parts of the story to us. Reminds me of storytime when I was little haha!

xo!

I saw the Frank Theathre production of The Pillowman at the Guthrie two years ago! :) However, to be honest, I don’t really think I understood all of it. In particular, I remember laughing at some points when no one else laughed and being silent when others were laughing. I think I should probably re-read the play now that I am older. I also know more about how a totalitarian regime functions and the effect it has on censorship, freedom of speech and an individual’s rights, than I did before. Even though I didn’t understand the play in its entirety, I remember it being shocking and thought-provoking. :)

Thanks for your other suggestions by Martin McDonagh, Sue! The Lonesome West sounds really good and pretty twisted. Basically it’s a story about two brothers, Coleman and Valene, that have a horrible relationship and are really violent. And from the stuff they do, it sound crazy. A Skull in Connemara sounds really interesting too. It’s about a guy named Mick who has been hired by the local parish to dig up old bones so there is room for new arrivals. Mick’s newest assignment is the wife he killed years before, which may or may not have been accidental. Cool. <3 I can’t wait to read these. :)

I am loving all of the SoGoPro suggestions! I almost done with The Grass Harp (which is amazing) and just picked up a copy of Wise Blood today. :) I can’t wait for more!

<3 kels

Nick, thanks for sharing another book. It seems very interesting.
However, I had some difficulties hearing the video because of the background: music, people talking loud, may be kitchen noise.
It would be better to do a reading in a quiet place like the 1st one you did in someone's place, so they aren't any distruptions.

I will be sure to get the PillowMan!! Sounds like a really good one. Sounds much better when you guys are reading it!

i really want to see/read this now! eek!

Aww, you guys are gorgeous.

Thank you for the post and the latest book club recommendation, I'll be sure to add it to my list. :)

That was very funny - Nick your reading was hilarious. Loving some of the lines.

I must admit though - The Pillowman isn't my favourite Martin McDonagh work.

The Lonesome West is my favourite - it's part of The Leenane Trilogy. I managed to catch this play in production in Cumbria, UK last year. It's fantastic!!

The other two plays in the trilogy are The Beauty Queen of Leenane, and A Skull in Connemara.
Both equally as moving as The Lonesome West.

You should check them out!

Thanks for this new suggestions , can't wait to begin it ...
Thanks for sharing :)

I'm really like way behind from all the books you guys have recommended... I admit I'm not really bookish (I know I should be reading more...), instead more of a music person but anyway I think the "gruesomeness" and sarcasm on this one seems interesting. Who knows I might go read it :D

it took me so long to get this vid to play but so worth it, those darn cliff hangers but i guess i will track the book down somehow lol. im begining to like this book club very interesting choices but they do catch your attention. anyhow thanks for the update hope you guys have a wonderful weekend.

Val

I must say I am very intrigued.....Out of all the literature courses I had to take to minor in English which was a tremendous amount... why, why, why didn't we ever get assigned to read the Pillowman, that would have been an assignment I looked forward to completing, unlike alot of the others were I procrastinated to the last possible minute to get it read in time lol.

I am going to hunt for it this weekend, that is if this so called blizzard that they are saying is going to be the storm of a decade hits my part of the sunflower state tomorrow... I actually can't wait to read it!

Thanks for sharing.... You guys Rock!

-Nickie

Wow. I am so pumped to have these new found readings that I must go get now!!
And I have got to agree with everyone who said your laugh is contagious. I love it! Please send me a bottle of it too! ha.
And I loved your "Amen!" thrown in there, Hilarie!

Not gonna lie, I was taken aback that they were beheaded. How sad :[ with good intentions! ha.
LOVE the SoGoPro book clubs :]

-alyssa.

Thank you for expanding my mind ... and my bookcase ... and my itunes ... and my happiness! You guys are great and I can't wait until your next post. In the meantime, I'll be reading and listening to some tunes :)

Smiles,
Angie

I ordered my copy of The Pillowman this afternoon. Can't wait for it to arrive. I'm learning so much from the SoGoPro Book Club. Thank you for opening my eyes to so many new and excellent writings.

Kim

Funny stuff guys! I shall add that to my reading list. BTW, Wise Blood was a great book, that Enoch Emery is something else.
-Ana, from TX

Sarah

that play is amazing....i am a theatre major and I have trouble sitting down and acually reading plays in one sitting and i did with this. We were going to have it as a main stage at my university but there were not enou parts in it....!!!

Yet another book i must add to my never ending pile of books!!!! I cant wait to get to this one, i love reading plays!!!! Thanks for sharing it with us! I cant wait to see what the next SoGoPro book is!! I think the next one should be Hilarie's pick or Kelly's pick since Nick and Austin have already shared one with us!!

Well how could I not want to read this...you read just enough to get me hooked! Luckily I found a copy at my little local used book store this evening....can't wait to get started!

Great suggestion guys. Thanks:>

***Susan

Well now really I must try to find a copy of this...I seriously doubt my local library will have it.

You know what would be really awesome. A SoGoPro's Book Club read aloud of this play. Like the whole thing...together. Like how it used to be in High School or middle school when we would read a play in English. I remember reading Our Town this way, and several others as well.

~Robin

Arghhh... Can I be your kid? You two are really something together. This Vlog made me laugh so hard! "That was the old Jesus!" That seems like an interesting play. I must check that out!I loved to hear more of it!

Gah..you guys are hilarious!I definitely want to get my hands on that book. Im loving that were getting a weekly dose of you guys via vlog. Keep it up.

"I'm gonna get naked in a minute" lol. Hil you crack me up!

Hilarie, you've got the most beautiful, contagious laugh ever! I love it!
Btw was that Chad texting you again? xPP

That books sounds very intriguing. I already searched it on amazon. =))

Haha yet again I am thoroughly amused! I will for sure be checking out this one. 'that was the old Jesus' LMAO! I too hate it when the parents get beheaded, how dreadful but yet disturbingly comedical the way it happened. Thanks for the new installment in SoGoPro bookclub, cant wait for the next! You guys are awesome!

Thank you both for making my day :)

The play sounds really witty, yet dark... Definitely on my "to read" list! Thank you so much for sharing!

Jess xoxo

I agree with Niamh...I burst out into laughter at the "your daughter's down here giving us a lot of shit"...and the..."it was cute at first but now it's getting really irritating", and I'm also sat here wondering why Im finding this so amusing? Oh well. Ha.

To be honest, I've always found it hard to follow plays, but this one actually sounds rather intriguing. Hmmmm. Perhaps I will venture out to find this one.

Oh, and I so wish you could've shown us the 'dragon', how cool! =)

Thanks guys, you never fail to entertain.

Much Love,
Lauren, UK.x

AHHH I THOUGHT NOBODY ELSE REALLY KNEW ABOUT THE PILLOWMAN. My college just did a production of it... it was WONDERFUL. The story stuck with me for weeks....
-p reilly

SO funny.

You guys are my favorite, lol. <3

I must admit I am compelled to read this. Truely hilarious, sounds like a "can't put it down" kind of read.

Love the wave, kelly. Oh and why don't we use the word floutist more?

“Jesus never stamped and screamed and thru his dollies about!"-That was hilarious. And true. I don’t think Jesus ever did do that-at least I haven’t read about it in the Good Book yet. Thank you for sharing that Nick-I’m most certainly going to have to find the end of it. I’m sure it has one of those spell-bound, make you reflect on your life and the person you’ve been type of endings. Love those.
Awesome guys. Thanks again,
Becca

my favorite crackheads! LMAO!

can someone bottle up Hil's laugh and send it to me? that'd be great, thanx!

It has been a long day, and I'm pretty exhausted, so maybe that would explain my hysterical laughter at the priest saying "your daughter's down here giving us a lot of shit." :P. Or perhaps, folks, it's just THAT funny :P.

Gotta love irish catholicism :P - although i confess i have never heard anything like that from a priest!

Anyways, i will try to check out The Pillowman, as I always find plays require a bit less concentration. After Wise Blood it is next on my list :).

Thanks so much for the reccommendations, I always love to see what you guys are enjoying, so that I can enjoy it too :).

Hope all goes well with everyone at SGP :).

Thanks for sharing. you arouse our curiosity and our interest for reading...It sounds really great!
thanks guys, and you'r really awesome! good team!
xoxoxo

OMG! I am reading this play for my theatre class at Auburn University. Pillowman is dark and startling...but amazing at the same time. I have never read anything like it before. I can't wait to hear what's up next for the SOGOPRO Book Club.

Wow, I am truely intrigued by this play now. I was sitting here hoping Nick would keep reading! I'll be trying to track it down first thing Monday. Thanks for sharing.

A fun blog yet again, love it!

Elise

Nothing like a new installment of SOGOPRO's Book Club on a Friday night :D Hilarie and Nick, you guys crack me up, I love it<3

Thanks so much for sharing your selection Nick. Definitely sounds interesting...I thought I recognized the title from Broadway!

Can't wait to see what you guys might be up to this weekend :P
