So Foxes.

Foxes is one of those rare songs that came to me in her entirety, quickly and without a single eraser mark.

I was sitting in my bedroom in an old, creaky house in Chapel Hill, NC with the two people that I trust most. It was late, too late probably, and we were talking about all of those things that break our hearts (as we ladies tend to do.) I had picked up my guitar (which I rarely do in front of people, you should know that, but these two… they are special) and one of my two specials asked if I would sing her a lullaby. And that’s how it happened.

Foxes, by nature, are tricky little things…. mischievous and sneaky and I just so happened to know one. I was discussing how, in a swindle, I had lost my heart, and because that was the topic of conversation that my specials and I were having, it became the topic of my lullaby as well.

I should tell you that the song is not only about getting tangled up and taken from… it’s also about being smarter than said Fox might’ve guessed. It’s about walking away knowing that you kept a little for yourself, that not all of your diamonds were stolen, that you didn’t lose it all. So, when you listen to the song, keep that in mind. Draw a dotted line over what you’re willing to give and what you know you should keep-- and if you’ve been there already… well, you tricky little thing, good for you.
