another SoGoPro book club entry from n.gray
if you're faithful enough to be gracing our site right now with your presence, then you're sneaking a peek at tomorrow's scheduled blog post a bit early. (it's midnight monday, my time.) my early-birding is peeking for two reasons. 1.) tomorrow promises to be a hectic day of planning for our webisode shoot on saturday and 2.) just moments ago, i finished reading the book which i want to write of today, and i want to write while what i'm feeling is fresh.
so here it is, the great, great, great, great book i'm bringing into the fold of the SoGoPro book club, the film club by david gilmour.

of the 24 books i've read this year, it is, without a shadow of a doubt, the best read i've had so far. it is the memoir of a man, david gilmour, who rather reluctantly allows his son jesse to drop out of high school under the agreement that he must watch three movies a week with his father. it is a very simple tale, and perhaps it is because of its lack of any pretensions that i find myself so attached to it.
(i'd like to mention briefly that any time i read a memoir, curiosity strikes in me as to how much of a creative license one takes with the events of their past, especially conversations that are in quotes. i'm going to look into this...)
if you love film, you will love this book. easy peasy. no doubt. while the main focus of the writing takes shape in how the movies david shares with his son happen to relate to the post-adolescent trials and tribulations jesse is encountering w/ school, girls, and becoming a man, gilmour also shares with the reader some remarkably beautiful insights into these films. worth it to mention, gilmour was a film critic for the canadian news program, the journal, so it's not just fluff. the love he has for film flows through his writing, and has done me the great honor of reminding me what it is that i love about film. the small and wondrous, brief and lasting moments that i think, as someone who has come to heavily criticize my own work and that of others (by necessity to make my work better), they are moments i've begun to take for granted, that i've forgotten. i want to watch movies again like david gilmour watches movies, like i used to. i need to give myself the two hours a week to watch one great movie. reading this book was a hard thump in my face that i need that, and i deserve it. the last movie i watched was 27 dresses, playing as noise on hbo while i sent out 17 emails...
i'm going to do this. and i'm going to share my journey with you. hold me to it.
i'll also add that david gilmour is a no-bullshit father of the most applaud-worthy type.
please read this book. it won't disappoint.
also, i was just able to download my pre-ordered copy of ANIMAL KINGDOM'S new record, "signs and wonders." it's got me looking so crazy right now!

I love your review of this book it definitely makes me want to read it, I love movies so... sounds like a no brainer. Well I applaud your effort to want to do a movie of the week that should be in everyones routine lol but you sir are an extremely busy man so we will only lightly hold you to it. Here is a thought..why not add it to the many segments of your website (haha just what you wanna do add to your workload) and start a movie club too!! ~Dana
don't you worry.
that is the plan!
Wow, I had no idea David Gilmore had published a memoir.
That'd be cool to read, and to give as a gift to my father.
Thanks for sharing!
And we will hold this to you!
Love, Ella
Oh wow going to see if i can put it on order right now. sounds like such a great read! :)
Hope all goes well with the planning of the shoot for Epi 2 of FUCT!!

Wow, I saw this book a couple of weeks ago in my book store and I bought it, I coudn't resist, the summary was great and I love films so... it's a "must read" book. I haven't started yet (I'm with Millenium right now) but I can't wait to read it.
Also, I want to say that I saw "Blindness" and I remeber that you talked about this movie a while ago... well, I loved it, my eyes were fixed on the screen, even in the worst moments, it made me feel sick and amazed and surprised, all at the same time. Thanks for the recommendation.
Besos.
This book sounds awesome and is about to be ordered.
Hope the hectic days work out well!!

I heard about this book awhile ago on a segment on NPR I believe. I was very intrigued and yet completely forgot about it until now. I know I can always count on SGP to lead me home and back to the things that my literary mind is craving. Thanks Nick!!
i saw this in a bookstore months ago! i've wanted to buy it for a long time but didn't have time to...
next week, i'll try and find it again. :D
thanks for the recommendation, i am definitely interested in this memoir. one, because i love memoirs and two, i love films. perfect match.
have a great day nick.
This memoir most definitely has me interested. I blame boxsets for my lack of film watching. I've a list of films that goes well into the hundreds, and I only just started nail biting into it again last night. Seeing as I will literally be bed bound for next month *curse it* It's the only form of stimulation I can handle.
And a good read.
